Tips to Organize Your Kitchen:

* Keep a binder of take out menus in your kitchen.  Also keep them in your office and car to save time.

* Remove from your kitchen counters anything you do not use on a daily basis.

* Keep as few plastic containers as possible.  A small family can usually get by with 15.  Most leftovers keep only for a few days.  Place them, with lids on, in a cabinet.  Be sure to clean out your fridge on a weekly basis (the night before trash pickup is best).

* Save time in the kitchen by assigning a "helper night" to each household member.  Let someone else handle the details such as getting out serving dishes, setting the table and putting rolls on a pan to bake.

How to Set Up a Pantry

A pantry is one of the most useful "closets" you can have.  It frees kitchen cabinet space and allows you to keep backup supplies of foodstuff thus saving time and money.

To set up a pantry, you can install shelving in a nearby closet or place a large pantry cabinet in or near the kitchen.  Even baskets on shelves will work.  You can even keep canned items and non perishables in a basement or garage pantry.

To set up an efficient pantry, separate into sections:

A) Canned fruits and vegetables
B) Pasta, rice and beans
C) Staples such as gravy mix, broth and sugar
D) Paper supplies including paper towels, plastic wrap and foil
E) Back up refrigerator items such as ketchup and mustard
F) Beverages
G) Breakfast items
H) Snacks
I) Desserts such as pudding and brownie mixes

Label the sections to make it easy for all household members to put away items.  Try to contain smaller items in baskets or transparent storage items.

Look around in stores and on the Internet for pantry storage items.  Even the local dollar store usually carries containers of different sizes.  Gravy packet holders, small stacking shelves for easy viewing of soup cans, baskets that hang on shelves to hold onions, and various other organizers increase your pantry storage space and make it easier for you to find items quickly.

If you can view most of your food supply at the same time, it's much easier to plan meals and make grocery lists.  For a free menu planning ideas list, send a blank email to meal_planning@sendfree.com.
